Le massif du Tanargue

The Tanargue is a mountain that extends between three valleys, the Beaume, the Borne and the Lignon. This massif extends to the southwest of the department of Ardèche, near the Gard and the Lozère. (Highest point Grand Tanargue 1511m)
Located in the south of the Ardèche department, the steep foothills of the Tanargue are part of the Monts d'Ardèche Regional Natural Park. It is a rich and fragile environmental site; a Remarkable Natural Area of the Monts d'Ardèche Regional Natural Park and a Sensitive Natural Area of the General Council. The Tanargue has considerable ecological wealth (beech-fir forests, peat bogs, blueberry areas, moors, meadows, etc.).

The origin of the name Tanargue dates back to Celtic times; Taranis, god of the sky and thunder, manifested himself violently on the mountain “Arga”. Tanargue thus designates the mountain of thunder.

Due to its topological, geological and climatic particularities, it is an important symbolic figure of the Ardèche which has fueled stories and artistic representations. The place attracts tourists and sportsmen, hikers or skiers.
