This charming Ardèche village owes its name to Charlemagne's legendary sword, named "Joyeuse". According to legend, in the year 802, on his return from Spain, Charlemagne set up camp near the Beaume River. One day, during a hunting trip, the emperor lost his precious sword. Promising a reward to anyone who found it, he was finally satisfied when a soldier brought him the weapon. True to his word, Charlemagne declared: "Here will be built an estate, of which you will be the lord, and your descendants will bear the name of my glorious sword, Joyeuse."
